Pre-Alchemy[]

Carolina had always been somewhat of a quirky girl. She definitely marched to the beat of her own drum. When she was five she colored outside of the lines and never within them, and with her favorite colors regardless of what the natural hue should be. She was the only girl and youngest child of a workaholic father and a stay at home mother. With five older brothers she had learned to be tough, but was also rather sheltered. While comfortable with them, she often felt unease when around others, unsure of how to connect. Not that she didn’t try, it just always seemed like they thought her a bit odd.

She had always done well in school and graduated top of her class, and was all set to go a prestigious college in the north east when her mother got sick. She refused to leave and after many arguments between her, her father, and her brothers, they finally realized they really couldn’t make her go. When her mother complained of the white walls she brought in construction paper and made a sun, when she said the silence hurt her ears, she hummed a song she had made up, and when she said she was tired, Carolina cried and told her it was okay and that she would wake her in the morning.

If she had learned anything from her mother’s passing it was that life was short and needed to be lived. She had been in a dark place for a while, despite this epiphany. Her father threw himself into his work even more and her brothers had their own families to be with. That wasn’t to say they didn’t care, and they often checked in on her, but she found herself quite alone at home. One night when she could no longer stand the silence of the large house, she went out in the snow.

To someone born in the northern state, the roads really weren’t all that terrible, but her mother had been correct, it wasn’t yourself you had to look out for, but the yahoos around you. This was the thought that ran through her mind, when walking through a pedestrian crossing, a car was unable to stop at the redlight and slid. She could remember the horn blaring and the lights in her eyes and then.. No impact. She had flinched away, saw nothing but it was as if the car had hit something stopping it in it’s tracks, because upon not being hit herself, she looked back to see that the car was stopped just feet in front of her, it’s front end smashed up like an accordion.

She still had nightmares about it, and was quite shook up over the whole ordeal for a while. And then one day she had seen one of those advertisements on T.V., the one with the governor and all the stars and such, saying how great California was. And something just.. Called to her. Okay maybe it was all the beautiful scenery and movie stars, but still. So, on an impulse she announced to her family, her intent, and despite their yelling at her and their refusals to let her go, she resolutely packed her bags and went. And found herself settling down in L.A.
